Re: Respite
background
Whilst in the slower part of my fall semester, I decided to lean on my camera for creative support. Over the course of a week, I visited San Diego State’s Black Student Resource Center to people-watch and shoot pictures. By the end of the week, I had a collection of photographs, that when reviewed painted a picture of unity and kinship found through shared experience, and learned ritual. Deciding that something this beautiful shouldn’t be kept to itself, I compiled the photos to create, Respite (2025), a photobook that explores the tethers of culture that connect black students on predominantly white campuses, and the quiet impact to be found in cultural microcosms.
Solution
Using simple secondary elements, I use lines as the primary motif throughout this project. Symbolizing unity and invisible string that ties us all together.
